1. How to log into unsw moodle

To access your courses via unsw moodle,

1. Go to the Moodle Login/Web Single Sign-On page...moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au
2. Are you logging in to courses offered by institutions using the Australian Access Federation (AAF), such as UNSW AGSM Executive Education, UNSW Institute of Languages, UNSW Mining Engineering Specialist Courses?

Once you are logged into UNSW Moodle, you will be directed to your Moodle home page.

The course home page is the main page of any Moodle course. It’s where the topics or weeks display, and the related lists of resources and activities.

2. What to do if your login fails

Logging into UNSW moodle may fail for a number of reasons:

    1. You may not have entered either your User ID or Password correctly.

• In the USER ID field, ensure that you have typed a “z” before your student number.
• Your PASSWORD (your zPass) is case sensitive. Check on your keyboard that Caps Lock is not on.

    2. You may not be currently enrolled in the online course.

    3. If Census Date has passed, you may be denied access if you have not paid your course fees. Check your fees status in myUNSW. Once you pay your fees, it can take up to 4 days for service to be restored.

   4. If you have recently changed your course enrolment, your online access may not yet have been updated. Allow 2 working days for this to be done.

myAccess allows you to access your applications that you would normally only get in the teaching labs virtually.

This means you can access them anytime, anywhere that you have an internet connection. Maple, Ansys, Matlab, and AutoCAD are just some of the applications already available.

Your profile determines what information other users can see about you in a Moodle course. It's also where you choose how you want to receive emails from Moodle, edit default forum preferences and edit text.

When you're first enrolled in a Moodle course, the system creates a personal profile for you. You can:

• Add an image of yourself, or an avatar, or any other image, which will display next to your contributions - for example, to your posts on discussion forums
• Add information about yourself and your interests
• Specify whether Moodle should display your email address to others and, if so, to whom
• Select the method Moodle should use to let you know what’s happening in your courses (configure your notification settings).

It is unwise to add personal details such as your street or postal address, phone number or instant messaging account details to any part of your Moodle profile. If you would like to share your social network handles put them in the Description box of your profile. Formal communications will still go to your UNSW email account (zMail).

Email display (1): Select whether to hide your email address, display it to everyone or display it to only fellow course students or hide the email address from non-privileged users (privileged users are teachers, managers, ect.). Note: You cannot change the zMail address within Moodle; however, using the UNSW Identity Manager you can redirect all email sent to that address to an email address that you check regularly. Country and Timezone settings (2): If you are living and studying in another country than Australia, select it from the Select a country drop-down list. If you are studying a Distance Course and are living in a different timezone from Sydney, Australia, select that timezone from the Timezone drop-down.

If studying in Australia, do not make changes to Country or Timezone, or your assignment deadlines will be different from those set by your instructors.

Description (3): To continue editing your profile, enter a description of yourself. Ensure that this is appropriate for display to instructors and to other students in your Moodle courses.

User Picture (4):To change your user picture, select User picture and use the file picker to upload a file. Note: the picture must be in either JPG or PNG, which Moodle resizes to 100x100 size.

Interests (5): List your interests (academic, leisure or both), separating each tag from the next with a comma.

Optional (6): Complete any relevant fields, remembering that these details will display on your profile page for instructors and other students to view.

5. UNSW Moodle System Requirements

To run UNSW Moodle effectively you should, as a minimum, use the system components listed on this page. If you do not, Moodle may still work but some functionality may be lost.

Workplace IT environments' internal configurations can also restrict the functionality of Moodle. Access to content may be affected, as may the possibility of uploading files. File size limitations may also apply. Workplaces may also have older versions of software, and UNSW Moodle may not perform well with these.

Operating system

Recommended

• Windows 10, Mac OSX High Sierra, iPad IOS10 or higher
• It is not recommended to use older versions of operating systems that are out of support such as Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.

Mobile devices

At present, the Moodle Mobile app is not supported  due to poor performance.  We recommend that on a mobile device you log in to UNSW Moodle using the web browser unless you are completing an assessment or activity that has a grading component.

If you are completing an assessment or activity that has a grading component we recommend that you use Moodle through a desktop browser.

Internet speed

Use a broadband connection through USB wireless modem, ADSL2+, T1/T2, fibre optic or cable with the speed:

Viewing lecture recordings or conferencing - at least 5MB/sec

Viewing images and webpages - at least 2MB/sec 

Dial-up access will be significantly slower, and we do not recommend it for using Moodle.

Internet browsers

Compatible browsers include:

• Google Chrome 32 bit version 8x or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Windows)
• Safari 14 or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Mac)
• Note that add-ons and toolbars can affect any browser's performance.

MS Internet Explorer is not recommended

• If you have any difficulty accessing UNSW Moodle, check that you are using one of the supported browsers above before you contact external support.

Settings

We recommend that the following be enabled:

• Pop-ups (in both Internet browser and security software)
• Javascript
• Plug-ins
• Adobe has stopped distributing and updating Flash Player as of 31 December 2020 (“EOL Date”). It is recommended to uninstall the Flash Player.

Resource viewing

• We recommend that you use the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
