What exactly is NSFAS?

NSFAS is a government institution within the Department of Higher Education and Training that was founded by the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to give financial assistance to disadvantaged students who seek to continue their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

UNIVERSITY Accommodation

  1. According to the university’s real costs (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)

Who is eligible for NSFAS funding?

  1. Every South African citizen
  2. All SASSA grantees are eligible for financing.
  3. Applicants with a combined family income of less than R350 000 per year
  4. Individual having a disability: The combined household income cannot exceed R600,000 per year.
  5. Students who began their studies before 2018 and have a family income of less than R122 000 per year.


Who is not eligible to apply?

  1. Students who have previously achieved a qualification.
  2. Students whose total home income exceeds R350 000 per year.
  3. Students that have already applied, qualified, and been awarded support. They will be supported automatically for the remainder of their study if they pass their courses and fulfill the academic standards.


NSFAS Disability Assistance

The NSFAS Disability Bursary Program assists students with impairments who require financial assistance and have the potential to complete their academic subjects. It is meant to offer students with the required supplementary training and assistance to help them overcome learning difficulties caused by impairments.

  5. Human Support

The application process for students with disabilities

If you have a disability, you must complete Annexures A and B and attach proof of disability and quotation for assistive devices with the application form.

Assistive device funding is subject to the same approval procedure as financial aid.

If you are successful in your financial aid application and have received notification of the final approval amount from NSFAS, you may arrange to purchase your assistive equipment through your university or TVET college’s student disabilities section. The assistive equipment can be purchased on your behalf by the university or TVET college.

Qualification Criteria for TVET College Funding

Only South African citizens are eligible for this bursary scheme;

  1. A student must be registered or intending to register on a PLP, NC(V) or Report 191 programme at any of the fifty (50) public TVET Colleges in South Africa;
  2. Must be in need of financial assistance (NSFAS will determine whether or not a student meets the financial eligibility criteria);
  3. Returning students must demonstrate proven and accepted academic performance (academically deserving) in line with the College’s progression policy or the progression prescriptions of the Bursary Rules and Guidelines (whichever is higher);
  4. Must not be enrolling for a qualification that duplicates previous learning that was state-funded; and
  5. Applicants will qualify if they fall within the maximum threshold of up to R350,000 of combined gross family income per annum and are admitted/received a firm offer for enrolment in a College.

Do you pay back NSFAS?

Yes NSFAS has to be paid back! Students borrow the money to cover their study costs. However, the loan only needs to be repaid after completing your qualification, upon leaving University or College, found employment / in business, earning R30,000 or more annually.

NSFAS funds a student for the duration of studies therefore NSFAS does not require the student to apply every semester or year. When a student is approved for funding it is for the whole academic year, and subsequent years after, provided that the student meets the academic progression requirements.

What are the requirements for nsfas 2023

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR NSFAS APPLICATION

All applicants will be required to submit the following supporting documents when applying – please ensure that you have these documents ready before submitting your application (note that no applications will be accepted without these documents):

South African ID document (this can include any of the following):

  • copy of green ID document
  • temporary ID from the DHA
  • copy of both side of Smart ID card
  • unbridged birth certificate
  • Non-SASSA grant applicants: Parents, guardians or spouse ID documents (copies only)
  • Own, parents, guardians or spouse proof of income, if a non-SASSA applicant (this can include any of the following):
  • latest payslip if employed (not older 3 months)
  • UIF letter
  • employment letter
  • retrenchment letter, if a non-SASSA applicant

Students with disabilities: complete and sign the Disability Annexure A Form (.pdf) and submit proof of disability and quotation for assistive devices

Students who are recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development: complete and sign the Vulnerable Child Declaration Form (.pdf)

NO, it does not affect your application but once you are a registered student at a higher institution and approved by NSFAS for funding you won't get the sassa relief grant because now you will be receiving a monthly allowance from nsfas.


Can you receive Sassa and NSFAS?

No person is able to receive both Nsfas funding and R350 grant payments. Should you however be receiving any other SASSA grants besides the R350 grant, you will immediately qualify to be funded by Nsfas. It is important to check the Nsfas requirements when you apply to see if you would qualify for the bursary scheme.
