What is Eagle Alert?

UNT conducts a routine test of its Eagle Alert system four times each year. This is a good time to check your contact information.
Eagle Alert allows UNT administrators to quickly contact campus community members about emergency situations affecting the safety and well-being of people on and around the UNT campus.
The system sends a message (recorded voice and text) to the user's phone and an email to all active students, faculty and staff. In addition to receiving text and voice messages by phone, the system includes a feature that overrides most computers operated by UNT in offices, classrooms and public spaces on campus. During the test or in the event of an emergency, computer screens, presentation screens and digital signs will display a full-screen test alert. Users have the option to click out of the screen after the alert has displayed.
The system must have the user's updated information and permission to send text messages for Eagle Alert. Only phone numbers in the U.S. 50 states are supported.
Students and faculty should update their phone numbers in my.unt.edu.

What's an emergency?
Eagle Alert and @UNTEagleAlert are only used in critical situations including:
- campus closings due to inclement weather
- health and public safety emergencies like chemical spills, fires or violence
Messages not only notify you about the situation but also let you know what kind of action you need to take. Follow up Eagle Alert messages will provide updated information for ongoing situations, as needed. Follow up messages also may include recorded voice messages.
Who decides when a message will be sent?
The decision to activate the Eagle Alert system for a message will be made by:
- the president
- chief of police
- provost and vice president of academic affairs
- vice president for finance and administration.
In order for the system to work effectively, UNT's students, faculty and staff must add their phone numbers into the system by logging in at my.unt.edu. Click on the green Eagle Alert banner to go to a page where you can provide or update three phone numbers – cell, home and office phone numbers.
On the Phone Numbers page, you also must indicate that text messages should be sent to your cell phone.

What will happen when the university closes?
When a decision is made to close the university, UNT will notify you by:
- sending an Eagle Alert message
- providing the information to campus telephone operators
- posting a message to the university website
- posting a message on the UNT Facebook page
- tweeting a message from @UNTEagleAlert
- sending campus emails
- informing news media
If the university is closed for more than one day, you should check the UNT website at www.unt.edu, the UNT Facebook page and @UNTEagleAlert for the latest information. The university also will continue providing updated information on Facebook and Twitter, to campus telephone operators, and will inform news media.
How can you make sure Eagle Alert works?
All students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled in the Eagle Alert system using the telephone numbers you provided to UNT during your registration or hiring process. You should check your contact information regularly and update it as soon as it changes. Students and faculty should change their contact info by logging in at my.unt.edu and staff should update their contact info by logging in at my.untsystem.edu and follow the instructions explained above.
You can update two numbers – a local number, such as a home phone, and a cell phone – as well as indicate which number is your primary number. You are able to indicate whether you would like text messages sent to the number you indicate as a cell phone.
A message will be sent to the mobile number you provide anytime Eagle Alert is activated. The text message will come from 89361 and the call will come from 940-369-8097. We recommend that you save these numbers in your phone’s contacts as Eagle Alert, so when you receive communications from them, they will be identified as from Eagle Alert. This will prevent your Eagle Alert messages as showing from an unknown source.
Please note: these numbers are not monitored or answered. In an emergency, always call or text 911.
To be sure you'll receive Twitter messages, simply follow @UNTEagleAlert. Consider turning on your mobile device's notification settings so that you will see our emergency tweets as they are delivered.
Like other emergency alert systems, Eagle Alert and @UNTEagleAlert are tested once each fall and spring semester by University Brand Strategy and Communications; Risk Management Services and the UNT Police Department by sending test messages to the university community. Additional limited tests are conducted as needed.

Eagle Alert is operated by Everbridge, that provides the same product to other universities and schools, including Texas Tech, Baylor, University of Dallas and the Richardson Independent School District. UNT's University Brand Strategy and Communications division manages @UNTEagleAlert.
