During the transfer window of each season, the Dstv Premiership has named some of the most expensive players and coaches over the years.

But who are South Africa’s highest-paid football coaches? That is precisely what the purpose of this post is to uncover. Furthermore, we will go through their history and why they have the right to charge such exorbitant rates.

1. Stuart Baxter – Salary: R600,000- R800,000 per month

Kaizer Chiefs have secured their new coach with the return of Stuart Baxter to Naturena. Baxter and the Club have agreed to a two-year contract  plus a two-year option as the coach of Amakhosi’s first team.

The last man to lead Amakhosi to silverware back in 2015, returns in an attempt to bring trophies and success back to a side that is expected to end its 6-year trophy drought.

He has let loose during the transfer season, taking full advantage of the recent lift to the transfer ban. Baxter has already signed 7 stars over to AmaKhosi.

The English coach was in charge of Chiefs from 2012 to 2015. During his first stint with the Club, he won several trophies with Amakhosi, including two league titles in 2012/13 and 2014/15, the Nedbank Cup in 2012/13 and MTN8 during the 2014/15 season.

    Club: Mamelodi Sundowns F.C.

    Age: 50 years old

Years of Active Coaching: 2007 – present

Manqoba Mngqithi, born April 25, 1971, is the joint-head coach of the PSL’s richest team, Mamelodi Sundowns F.C., as well as the division’s second-highest-paid coach.

Formerly a schoolteacher, the Umzimkhulu-born strategist has earned and continues to prove his position in the game. He has managed many PSL clubs, notably Golden Arrows F.C., whom he led to victory over Ajax Cape Town in the 2009 MTN 8 — a 6-0 thrashing of the latter – in his first tenure with the club.

Mngqithi brings a wealth of expertise to the table, having worked as a coach/manager for over 15 years. In 2007, he took his first formal coaching position with Golden Arrows. In 2009, he led the team to their first-ever cup victory, the MTN 8 title.

He had one-year stints with AmaZulu F.C. (2010–2011), Chippa United F.C. (2012), and Golden Arrows F.C. (a second stint; 2012–2013) before joining Pitso Mosimane’s Mamelodi Sundowns in 2013.

Mngqithi won numerous PSL championships with the club during that time, including the 2016 Telkom Knockout Cup, the 2016 CAF Champions League, and the 2017 CAF Super Cup.

Following the departure of the famous Pitso Mosimane to the Egyptian team Al Alhy F.C. in September 2020, he was named joint-head coach of The Brazilians, alongside Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela.  Read Also: Top 10 Kaizer Chiefs Highest Paid Players 2022

3. Josef Zinnbauer Salary: R650,000 per month

    Club: Orlando Pirates F.C.

    Age: 51 years old

Years of Active Coaching: 1996 – present

Josef Zinnbauer is one of the highest-paid football coaches in South Africa. The former German midfielder, born on May 1, 1970, began his coaching career in 2005 with VfB Oldenburg.

After five seasons with the club, he took on a variety of reserve team jobs until taking over as head coach of Hamburger SV in 2014. He was only in charge for a year until being demoted to the reserve squad in 2015.

His next position as a head coach occurred the same year, in September 2015, when he was hired by the Swiss club FC St. Gallen.

Four years later, in 2019, Josef Zinnbauer returned to the PSL as the head coach of Orlando Pirates F.C., which was in a mid-table position when he took over. However, the Buccaneers finished third that season.

4. Erick Tinkler Salary: R650,000 per month

    Club: Maritzburg United F.C.

    Age: 51 years old

Years of Active Coaching: 2013 – present

Eric Tinkler, who was born on July 30, 1970 in Roodepoort, is the current manager of Maritzburg United. Maritzburg United is a football team from South Africa that plays in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He rose through the ranks and was dubbed a “skillful midfielder” during his playing days. He was a key component of the South African national team, appearing in 45 games and scoring one goal. Eric was also a member of the 1996 Bafana Bafana side that won the African Cup of Nations.

His club career took him to Europe, where he played for Vitória of Portugal from 1992 to 1996. After winning the Nations Cup, he was recruited by Cagliari in Italy, where he played for one season (1996-1997) before coming to England to sign for Barnsley F.C. in July 1997.

After five seasons in England (1997–2002), the 6ft1 midfielder moved to Portugal for three seasons with Caldas before returning to South Africa to play in the PSL with Bidvest Wits F.C. in 2005.

His first appointment in football management occurred in December 2013, when he was named head coach of the Orlando Pirates, a position he held until 2016.

After that, he was chosen the inaugural head coach of Cape Town City Football Club, and by June 2017, he had departed to become the head coach of SuperSport United F.C.

His tenure with the latter club lasted less than a year, as he left in March 2018. With a salary of R650,000, his current job as manager of Maritzburg United F.C., which he joined in January 2019, makes him one of the highest-paid managers in the PSL.

5. Rhulani Mokwena Salary: R650,000 per month

    Club: Mamelodi Sundowns F.C.

    Age: 34 years old

Years of Active Coaching: 2014 – present

Rhulani Mokwena, who works as a “joint-head coach” for Mamelodi Sundowns F.C., is at the top of the second half of this list, with a monthly salary of R650,000. His father, Julius ‘KK’ Sono, played for Orlando Pirates F.C. in the 1980s, therefore he hails from a footballing family.

At the same time, his uncle is Jomo Sono, the founder and coach of Jomo Cosmos F.C. in Mzansi. Mokwena did not pursue a career as a player; instead, he chose to work in the administration of the beautiful game.

Under famous coaches such as Cavin Johnson and Steve Komphela, he began his coaching career as an understudy at Silver Stars F.C., which subsequently became Platinum Stars F.C.

Rhulani will subsequently become one of experienced coach Pitso Mosimane’s assistants at Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. in 2014.

He assisted the team in winning the CAF Champions League in 2016 before going to Orlando Pirates F.C. in 2017 to act as an assistant to Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevi.

When his principle quit in August 2019, he was given control of the club for the following five months – until December – when he reverted to his former job as the club recruited German strategist Josef Zinnbauer.

Three months later, he was hired as the head coach of Chippa United F.C., a PSL franchise. His tenure with the club, however, was cut short by the suspension of football in South Africa, including the PSL, owing to the coronavirus epidemic.

His contract with Chippa United had expired when he returned, and he was named joint-head coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi at Mamelodi Sundowns F.C.

6. Benni McCarthy Salary: R600,000 per month

    Club: Amazulu F.C.

    Age: 43 years old

Years of Active Coaching: 2017 – present

Benedict “Benni” McCarthy is now the coach of PSL club side Amazulu F.C. and earns R600,000 each month. Benni is now one of the highest-paid coaches in the PSL. McCarthy, who was born on November 12, 1977, in Cape Town, South Africa, is a well-known football legend in Mzansi.

As a player, he is one of the few Mzansi football players to have enjoyed a successful club career in Europe. His professional career began in 1995, when he joined with Seven Stars Football Club at the age of 17.

After two seasons, he moved on loan to Cape Town Spurs F.C. before becoming an Ajax Cape Town player when Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs combined to create Ajax.

In 1997, he traveled to Europe to play with AFC Ajax, where he won the Eredivisie in his debut season, scoring nine goals. Celta de Vigo bought him from AFC Ajax in 1999, but he never quite found his spark, and then FC Porto came calling – first as a loan transfer in 2002, and then as a complete buy in 2003.

In the 2003/2004 season, he was the key man for the squad, which went on to win the Primeira Liga (with McCarthy leading the domestic scoring charts with 20 goals) and the UEFA Champions League.

Between 2006 and 2010, he played for Blackburn Rovers F.C. in the English Premier League (EPL), before moving to West Ham United F.C. for one season before returning to the PSL with Orlando Pirates F.C. in 2011.

Benni McCarthy won a division title in his birthplace after helping the Buccaneers repeat their treble-winning season the previous season.

His coaching career has not yet achieved the same level of success as his playing career. However, it all began in 2015 with an assistant management position at Sint-Truiden in the Belgian professional football division.

He resigned the position in 2016, and in 2017, he took over as head coach of Cape Town City F.C. in the Premier League. It did not go as planned, and he was sacked after 18 games with only two victories. Benni is the current coach of Amazulu F.C., having taken over for Ayanda Dlamini in December 2020.

Kaitano Tembo’s current deal with SuperSport United pays him a monthly salary of R500,000, making him the third highest-paid coach in the club’s history.
